Everybody who lives in Hammarby
Sjöstad is a part of an eco-cycle. The eco-cycle solution in Hammarby
Sjöstad is called the Hammarby Model and handles energy, waste, sewage and
water for both housing and offices.
The model has been developed by
Fortum, Stockholm Water Company and the Stockholm Waste Management
Administration.
The goal is to create a residential environment based on
sustainable resource usage. Energy consumption and the waste
production are to be minimized while the resource saving, reusing and
recycling are maximized.

One example of the eco-cycle is how the combustible waste is incinerated
to produce both electricity and district heating. Combustion of waste is not
exclusively for Hammarby Sjöstad, it's rather quite common in Sweden, but
the way it is interacted like it is in the model is not as common, if at all
existing.
Another example of renewable energy used in Hammarby Sjöstad is how the
waste heat from the treated wastewater is used for heating up the water in
the district heating system.
